Snowdon Wheelchair Marathon

snowdonA TEAM from Swindon has entered a challenge to take a person in a wheelchair on a ten-kilometre obstacle course in Snowdonia. The team from the Swindon MS Therapy Centre has entered the challenge to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. This is the first year that a team from Swindon has taken part in the challenge, which this year has attracted more than fifty teams. The aim is to take a person who has multiple sclerosis in a wheelchair across the mountain course. The terrain is likely to include rivers, mud, rocks and steep slopes.

The team must be equipped for all weathers and the wheelchair passenger is equipped with protective headgear and warm, comfortable, waterproof clothing. Brian Danby, one of the volunteers at the centre, is leading the team, and Alan Hardy, of Eldene, father of five-year-old twins will be in the wheelchair.

Jackie Wray, the manager of the Swindon Therapy Centre, “It’s quite a big thing to do, getting the team together, and also the challenge itself. “Hopefully if it’s successful we might have more teams in future years.”

The challenge takes place between Friday July 8 and Sunday July 10. Anyone who would like to sponsor the team or find out more about the Swindon MS Therapy Centre should telephone 01793 481700.
