Charity Auction

SWINDON THERAPY CENTRE for Multiple Sclerosis held a Grand Charity Auction last Friday 29 April 2005 at the Hilton Hotel, West Swindon.   Our target of £2500 was exceeded and an amazing £5,500 was raised!

The star item “The Order of the Phoenix” personally signed by JK Rowling (complete with letter of authenticity) made £1,500 bought by a London book shop.  The “Elton John signed Greatest Hits CD” went for £290; 2 tickets to an England Football World Cup Qualifying Game went for £240; 2 nights B&B in Spain went for £160; an England baseball cap signed by Sir Geoff Hurst went for £45; Swindon Town Football signed by all the players went for £70; 2 VIP Tickets to a Swindon Town Football Game, including meal and car parking went for £150; Red Rum Framed Print signed by Tommy Stack (jockey who rode Red Rum to his 3rd Grand National victory) went for £180 and James Bond Framed Print signed by Maud Adams (actress in Octopussy) went for £41.

We would like to thank all the donors of the various auction items for their generosity in making this, our first auction, so successful.  Thanks also go to the Hilton Hotel, who gave us the venue free, and also to the auctioneer who gave his services free for the evening.   We would also like to thank Bayer Pharmaceuticals who gave us sponsorship towards the evening’s expenses.  Thanks also to the “The Bullfrogs”, a local Rhythm and Blues Band who provided the entertainment and helped to make the evening go with a swing!

The money raised at the auction will go towards the MS Centre, which is based at Cheney Manor and which offers therapies for people with Multiple Sclerosis.  Annual running costs exceed £30,000 and much of this is raised through fund-raising events such as the auction, as the Centre receives no central funding of any kind.
